By September, rescue workers in central Italy had given up hope long ago of finding any survivors in the country’s worst earthquake in decades. But 10 days after the quake, they saw movement — a golden retriever, who made his way out of the rubble. In the face of such a tragedy, this little glimmer of hope provided smiles and a much-need boost of morale.
